The DOEM is the clinical arm of the Department of Preventive Medicine, having established a program that serves the Long Island community at the national, state and local levels, which is staffed by board certified physicians in Occupational Medicine and a highly specialized clinicians and fully equipped to provide all types of occupational and environmental health services. All Division faculty have UHMC attending privileges and may admit patients for treatment and provide in-patient consultation.

The DOEM, through its clinical center (COEM), has entered into agreements with employers, unions, government agencies, health insurance carriers, and the university to provide a variety of occupational and environmental health and clinical preventive medicine services.

It has provided group services to over 100 agencies, departments and labor organizations, representing over 80,000 covered employees. The growth of the program has been substantial, as only a few agreements existed in 1987, when the program was started. Over 90% of the patients are treated through managed care-type group agreements; the rest are seen as fee for service (third party payments) patients.
