PATIENT INFORMATION
What is Primary Care for Adults?
Adult primary care is the comprehensive care of patients age 18 and older. This is offered by the Division of General Medicine and Geriatrics at the University Medical Center at Stony Brook, and also at several off-campus sites. Our services are tailored to maintain health, treat acute and chronic disease, and emphasize a preventive approach to health care.
Patients seeking primary care at Stony Brook may do so as outpatients in a setting similar to that of a private physician's office. An interdisciplinary team of physicians and nurse practitioners provides comprehensive services.
Our internists are certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Most also possess the additional qualification of certification in Geriatric Medicine. They hold faculty appointments in the School of Medicine at the University at Stony Brook. In addition to clinical practice, our physicians continue to teach Fellows, Residents, and Medical Students as well as conduct clinical research.
Nurse practitioners collaborate closely with our physicians, delivering primary care, counseling patients regarding health promotion and helping physicians assess care needs of patients with chronic medical problems.
The primary care center's team approach ensures that if your doctor is out of the offfice, another physician or nurse practitioner will be available should you need immediate care.
